Quarterly Meeting Recap: July 15, 2024

We had a fantastic Quarterly Meeting on July 15, 2024, at the historic Commemorative Air Force hangar in DeLand, FL. It was a great opportunity for our members to connect, discuss chapter activities, and learn from insightful guest speakers. Here’s a detailed recap of the meeting:

Introductions and Attendance:

  • 17 members attended, including 3 officers, with 3 members joining in person.
  • We welcomed 3 new members: Carrie, Jean, and Denese, who switched from the Space Coast 99s.
  • Officers in attendance were Kirsten Kasper, Laura Kelly, and Amanda Fallon.

Chair Briefings:

  • Secretary Report: Kirsten and Amanda introduced our new secretary, Lain.
  • Treasurer Report: Kirsten reported on behalf of Lauren that the bank account name has been successfully changed to Daytona 99s. Now, three board members have access to the account, ensuring better accountability. We’ve also added Stripe, in addition to Zelle, as a payment platform for members to pay dues.
  • Scholarship Report: Amanda discussed a QR code that links to our updated scholarship list, showcasing all available scholarships. Congratulations to Amber for winning the Amelia Earhart scholarship and Lilly for receiving the First Wing scholarship! Amanda is preparing for the upcoming Women in Aviation scholarship applications opening on August 1st. She also plans to present scholarship opportunities at Girls in Aviation Day on September 21st and local libraries to help aspiring aviators.
  • Fundraising Report: Jennifer, although absent, was represented by Amanda, who shared Jennifer’s progress in selling stickers and little airplanes to raise funds. We are also exploring new fundraising ideas to support our chapter’s activities and the creation of a scholarship fund.

Upcoming Events:

  • Social at the Gin Mill: Join us on August 1st at DeLand Airport for a fun social gathering.
  • Compass Rose Painting: Scheduled for November 9th at Valkaria Airport in Brevard County, with Naiara providing insights about the event.
  • Women in Aviation Day: On September 21st, we have the opportunity to volunteer and support the Daytona Women in Aviation chapter.
  • Southeast Sectional Conference: We are excited to host the Southeast Sectional Conference in fall 2025. Planning is underway for what promises to be an enriching event, featuring speakers, activities, and the participation of 50-75 members.

Member Feedback and Other Business:

  • Laura requested the creation of a 2×3 banner for the chapter to enhance our visibility at events.

Guest Speakers:

  • John Foster and Dave Baldwin gave an informative presentation on the FAA’s proposal to expand Class C airspace at Daytona International Airport, with similar changes proposed for Palm Bay and Jacksonville. Their insights sparked meaningful discussions on how these changes could impact general aviation pilots.

We thank everyone who attended and contributed to the vibrant discussions. Your participation is vital to the success of our chapter and our mission to support women in aviation. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and continuing to build a strong, supportive community.

Stay tuned for more updates and keep soaring!
